It's quite daunting."

Jack ran his fingers tips up the bridge of Ianto's nose, and smoothed out the worry lines between his eyes, "How many times has this happened to you? This… magnitude of change?"

Ianto paused to consider, "5 times."

Jack raised an eyebrow, "It seems like Torchwood London wasn't as thorough in their background checks as they thought."

Ianto snorted, "London was never as thorough as they believed. But they were always too arrogant to realize it."

Jack tilted his head slightly, the wheels already beginning to turn…

"Oh no. You're not going to…," Ianto's eyes filled with sudden tears, "bribe Tosh with any more of that Falaxian teleporter schematic you’ve been hoarding to hack into records, because you can't now." He took a steadying breath and smiled, "And if you try and sick Gwen on me, I will kill you in the most embarrassing way I can think of."

With that settled, Ianto pushed back from the table and leaned down for another slow and simmering kiss. "I will tell you," he said finally as he ran a gentle, caressing thumb along Jack's lips, "Just not today." He wasn’t sure what to expect, but for some reason that was pretty much the way things always ended up for him, so while he didn’t think he’d ever get used to it, it wasn’t going to stop him either.

There was no response to his gentle knock, but he thought he could hear the soft hum of a conversation beyond the closed door. He continued to listen for a moment, straining to hear the words, but still couldn’t make out anything beyond an unintelligible murmur.

After waiting long enough to be polite, he touched a few buttons on his wrist band and the door popped open. The conversation Jack had heard was easily identifiable now, but there was still no reaction to his presence from inside the flat, so Jack decided that was as good an invitation as he was going to get and cautiously moved inside.

It had been two days since Jack had ordered Ianto out of the hub once they had finished hiding away the shattered remnants of three lives cut so cruelly short. At the time, Jack hadn’t cared where he went just so long as he was out of Jack’s sight, because with the torrent of emotions that had been going through his mind at the time, he really didn’t know what he wanted to do. And Jack had already spent far too much of his too long life regretting mistakes.

Gray light flickered along the walls of the hallway as Jack made his way into the flat, and Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were talking about what makes a racehorse run. Once the living room was in view, Jack breathed a mental sigh of relief when he saw the back of a head covered in unruly brown curls, wrapped up in a surprisingly threadbare blanket on the sofa.

The figure made no movement and didn’t acknowledge Jack’s presence at all, but his nose would have told him long before now if he was going to have four bodies to bury. The fact that Ianto was still here and at least physically intact counted as a win in Jack’s book.

From where he stood, Jack could almost see the whole apartment. It was sparsely furnished, and apart from the haphazard stack of DVD cases next to the television, there didn’t seem to be many personal items. No trinkets or books or even any mail. A few pictures hung on the walls, but they looked like they came with the apartment. There were no personal photos at all, not even any of Lisa.

The kitchen turned out to be just as bare. While there was the usual paraphernalia for making tea, the fridge only held a couple of leftover containers and a bit of milk that was a week out of date. Seeing the food decided Jack on his course of action.

Leaving the kitchen, he approached the man on the sofa. Ianto didn’t look at him, just kept his eyes on the television screen, and Jack wasn’t entirely sure that Ianto was even aware that he was there. Jack could see now that he was mostly dressed – old jeans, t-shirt and socks – so he retrieved the worn pair of trainers from near the door and then knelt in front of Ianto to get his shoes on him.

Once he was done, he looked up and found Ianto watching him. He had seen Ianto’s eyes look a dozen different ways, but he had never seen them look so dull and lifeless. He had to fight the almost overwhelming urge to gather him up in his arms and try to chase that look as far away as was humanly possible. For right now, he needed to keep this as impersonal as possible, for both of their sakes, even though it so clearly wasn’t for either of them.

Owen had given him a terse rundown of the sorts of mental and physical issues they were probably dealing with, though Jack pointedly ignored his repeated urgings that a simple bullet to the head would be the most efficient course of action. Listening to Owen, he finally got a picture of just how much of an idiot he was.

He knew first hand what kind of horror Canary Wharf had probably been, but because of his personal dealings with London, he had painted them all with the same brush and had written them all off as deserving their fate. And on top of that, none of them were his responsibility.

But Ianto had impressed him. He’d been tenacious and resourceful and… human, not at all like the automatons he’d met whenever he dealt with London and so he just didn’t connect what happened there with the Ianto that had come to work for him.

Suzie, of course, should have been a wake up call for him that things aren’t always as they seem, but by then Ianto had made himself part of the furniture. A very decorative and useful part, but still… just furniture. Now Jack understood that was by design and he’d fallen for it hook, line and sinker.

“Come on. You need some fresh air.” Trying to put as much authority into his tone as possible, he took hold of the other man’s arm and urged him to his feet. To Jack’s relief, he came without protest and only wobbled a little once Jack got him upright. Jack steered him towards the door and was further encouraged when Ianto grabbed his own coat on the way out.

Sullen and silent, Ianto walked along beside him, but Jack decided he could deal with that just fine, and it actually was a glorious morning. He led the way to a café he knew of that was optimistic enough to have an outdoor seating area. As expected, it was full today, but Jack had made friends with the waitress who was on duty, and she seated them almost right away.

“What can I get you?” Another perky waitress appeared and Jack didn’t even look at Ianto, just flirted with her a bit because if felt good to see someone smile, and ordered two breakfasts. Once she was gone, Jack chattered about a spat Gwen and Owen had had the previous evening. Ianto still wasn’t acknowledging his presence, but if it was one thing Jack could do, it was talk. And once he started, he found he didn’t want to stop.

Their breakfasts arrived and Jack continued his monologue between bites. He figured that even if Ianto didn’t actually eat anything, it had still been a good idea to get him out of that flat, so he wasn’t at all bothered by the fact that the plate remained untouched in front of him. Jack had moved on to a favorite story of an associate he’d had on Geldon 4, leaving out, of course, the name of the planet and the fact that it’s inhabitants had hands like a squid’s tentacles, even though that was the funniest part of the story. He struggled to not bat an eye when Ianto eventually reached out and poured himself a cup of tea and took a piece of toast.

By the end of the meal, Jack hoped it wasn’t just his own wishful thinking that Ianto seemed to be just a little bit more there with him than he had been when they sat down. Once he paid the bill, they set off back towards Ianto’s flat, but came upon the SUV before they got there. Jack stopped beside it and got his keys out. Before he unlocked the door he turned to Ianto, “I’ll be back at the same time tomorrow, so be dressed and ready to go when I get here.”

Without waiting for any response, he got into the car and eased it away from the curb. In the rear view mirror, he watched as Ianto went up the stairs to his building and paused to look back at the SUV. Jack was too far away now to see Ianto’s face, and he knew Ianto couldn’t see him, but somehow it still felt like they were… connected? Or something. Whatever it was it wasn’t at all unpleasant. Eventually Ianto disappeared inside. Jack let out a breath he hadn’t realized he’d been holding and found he was actually looking forward to tomorrow. Hopefully this wouldn’t turn out to be one of those decisions he’d end up regretting.

Since Mari77's post in the ep thread on TWoP let me know exactly what part to mute/ignore, I decided to watch Mystery Spot and...

“You peed yourself.” BWAH!!! Dean's reaction was priceless.

The synchronized-speak in the diner? AWESOME!!

“I’m supposed to wake up.” Oh Sammy. **sniffle**

I also liked the ‘Sam as John’ montage since I have always felt that Sam was so much like John – personality wise – and that that’s one of the main reasons they butted heads so much and it was really nice to have the show confirm that.

And OMG the HUG!!! I loved that. The way Sam sort of stutter-walked towards him, and Dean, a little taken aback at first, but then just accepting and just letting Sam practically smother him and then knowing exactly what it was about, the way he said, “Just how many Tuesday’s did you have?” and Sammy just clutching him so tight and not letting him go.

And I’m totally going to wank in my little brain that Dean is more than aware that something really traumatic happened to Sam, and that he's more than smart enough and intuitive enough to connect the dots and have a really good idea of exactly what it was and he'll know just how to handle his brother.

So I have been pondering, as you do when you fall out of love, and in retrospect, the writing has indeed been on the wall since Home (though I truly didn’t want to believe it at the time, and things were still open enough then that they could have planned/found a way to incorporate both boys in The Grand Scheme – if they had wanted to), but at that time The Grand Scheme was only a tiny scribble in the corner and was fairly easily fanwanked or ignored because Sam and Dean - and their struggles within this world - still came first and it was gripping and moving and engrossing.

Then came Season 2… Dean’s character still struggled and it was poignant and heartbreaking, but Sam seemed to be distracted and drawn to something far grander than just the simple loss of the only parent (Dean’s expanded role in his life notwithstanding, he was not Sam’s parent) he’d ever known and with whom he’d had a passionate and tumultuous relationship, because there were Psychic Kids and Demons on the prowl. Oooh shiny!! Only not to me. But I still had several terrific family/brother/saving people, hunting things type of eps so I could ignore or fast-forward through the occasional foray into Sam’s Grand Demon Destiny and be happy.

Now we have Season 3… and while there have been some fantastic scenes, and ideas and performances, I have basically lost all interest in anything that’s going on because even when they do an ep that is more of a standalone, it seems like the demons are still looming over everything. And while I guess that’s the intent and I’m supposed to be afraid for the boys and engrossed in the mystery… in actual fact, I just don’t care. At all.

I don’t care about Sam’s Demon Destiny or Dean’s Deal, and while I probably would have had a bit more interest in these things if the overall mystery had been shown to be a Winchester thing, rather than a Sam thing, it’s the Grand Destiny part that leaves me coldest. I thought they had a chance to get the show back to what I enjoyed most when they killed the Yellow Eyed Demon because that did give them a plausible way for making Sam basically ‘normal’ again, but if Psychic Sam is back… that’s out the window too.

And Kripke should absolutely tell whatever story he wants to tell, but probably the biggest thing I take issue with about how he’s chosen to tell this story – Sam’s story – is that to tell this well, he never should have made Dean Sam’s brother, and he never should have given Dean the same level of emotional involvement from the beginning as Sam had. Because as the story seems to be positioned now, he really can’t tell this story about Sam, the Psychic Boy Demon King without leaving Dean behind or at least putting him to the side, but he can’t really leave Dean behind because he has as much emotional investment and as much history in everything that’s happened as Sam does.

So The Grand Scheme of Sam’s journey, and the story itself, stagnates. And since The Grand Scheme feels as though it has permeated just about everything this season, especially with the addition of Ruby, the snail’s pace is so very evident and there just isn’t enough ‘other’ for me to really focus on. I still enjoy watching the boys work, but I’ll probably wait until after the season (however many eps we end up getting) is finished to watch the rest of it so I can fast-forward through all the demon stuff.

Serioulsy, he is a freakin' genius. This looked really good and that totally hid the fact that there was really no plot/story other than to get them to 2007 from 1999. But dayum, it looked awesome.

And I have to say the actors were all likeable and the characters well played. I just can't really think of anything else to say about it other than it was pretty. The quest they're on seems pretty thin at this point and I am actually of the mind that there is nothing they can do to stop SkyNet taking over. No matter what they destroy or who they try to kill, it just won't change anything. What it will do though, is give John training. Right now he is a typical 15 year-old and I thought the actor did a really good job portraying that.

So his metamorphasis could be interesting to watch, and also how his relationship with his mother evolves. I've got two more eps to watch and we'll see if it still holds up after the magic of David Nutter has worn off.

I am a Jack/Ianto shipper. Yes, completely and totally. I make no apologies for it whatsoever, but that is not the only thing I like about the show.

I have some serious issues with Gwen’s character completely separate and apart from bias #1. I think there is a HUGE disconnect between how TPTB intend Gwen’s character to come across and how she actually does come across to me.

Eve Myles is a terrific actress. I think this is the ONLY reason I don’t completely despise the character (a la my feelings about Duncan Kane/Teddy Dunn).

I could really like Gwen if... She stopped fucking with Rhys like he’s some old toy she’s tired of, but can’t replace because the one she really wants is too expensive for her to buy (because if that’s the case, why the fuck doesn’t she just go toy-less for a while and let Rhys be loved by someone else, as he deserves); her relationship with Jack was shown to be one of friendship and respect, but not romantic (something we don’t get a lot of between male/female characters and it would be a nice change – kind of like Gil and Catherine in CSI, though I know there are G/C shippers and I think that’s totally cool, but the show doesn’t really go there aside from some ambiguous subtext once in awhile); she stopped acting like a know-it-all bitch when she, in fact, doesn’t know anything more than anyone else (unlike Tosh who acts like a know-it-all when she actually DOES know-it-all about whatever particular subject she’s know-it-all-ing about).

Goofy storylines or not, I love this show and I am about as engaged and obsessed with it as I was with Veronica Mars in season 1 and with Supernatural before Dawn O. interfered and Kripke went demon-happy.

Okay so now, the episode… I loved the Blowfish in the Purple Suit. Just. Loved. I loved how he grunted and waved the old lady across the street, I loved his haughty attitude, I loved his exposition spewage to get newbies up to speed, and did I mention?

As for whom exactly he came back for? I do think he came back for all of them. He said that at the end of his Dr. Who stint, and he said that here a couple of times. But… I do believe he had been thinking about Ianto specifically in addition to everyone else (as he said later in the office scene), and I do think that pause was meant as a special call out to Ianto before he included everyone else, despite the fact that he used the same line again later on Gwen.

James Marsters rocked Captain John so hard, and I have no problem at all believing that John and Jack had a Relationship way back when, and that they were partners in every sense of the word, both actors sold it completely. I also found the glimpse of PastJack, through the mirror of Captain John, to be really enlightening and I thought that was a fantastic way to show us (rather than tell us) what Jack was like before he met the Doctor. And I think it was clear from their interactions now that even then, there was always a critical difference between their respective ‘moral’ codes.

Gwen and Jack… **bangs head on keyboard**. Okay, much has been said about this scene already, though I admit I haven’t really read much of it because the subject just annoys me, but my feelings about it have evolved a bit from the first time I watched it to now (after several viewings of the ep).

First time through, my reaction was very similar to a lot of other people’s in that I felt that Jack was genuinely coming on to her for no other reason than that he wanted to, backed off when he saw the ring, and then his asking Ianto on a date later was… I don’t know, something to soothe his bruised ego? Yeah, not really what I was hoping to see. But now, I have some different feelings about it after having some time to process, and after taking notice of more details in both of those scenes (and also exercising a bit of my fanwanking skills), plus I really don’t think I’ll be able to really process this scene fully until I get some additional context about their (all the relevant ‘their’s’) relationship in future eps.

Before I get to Jack though, I’ll tackle Gwen because I think this is a good example of why I dislike her character SO MUCH. “No one else will have me”???? WTF??? If that’s the way she feels then WHY DID SHE AGREE TO MARRY RHYS????? Seriously!! How fair is that to HIM??? Could she BE any more of a tool???? I just… GAH!!! **steam coming out of ears** Anyway, whatever. Gwen’s an ass and I don’t fucking care if she has a schoolgirl crush on Jack, but chooses to use Rhys as emotional support while not giving Rhys any in return. Just… What. Ever.

But Jack’s actions I found interesting. And let me start by saying I do absolutely believe that Jack is physically attracted to Gwen (in much the same way he is to Ianto. To me, that’s canon. I may not like it because I don’t like Gwen, but I think that is a given) and that to me, the flirting was indeed genuine, but that wasn’t all there was to it… or to his using the ‘I came back for you’ line on her too. I also think he would shag her in a heartbeat, but her relationship with Rhys (and to a lesser extent, Owen) in S1 stopped him and he does truly believe that she should hold on to what she has because he, at least, is capable of seeing the value of it and knows that Gwen’s LUCKY to have Rhys in her life (IF she actually cared about him), even if Gwen herself has no fucking clue.

So Jack… one thing I really do hope we get to see this series is some exploration of how Jack really views relationships. I feel like I don’t really have a handle on that yet. We’ve seen some examples – Rose/Nine, Ten, Estelle, John… Gwen and Ianto… and it seems like once he gives his heart he gives it completely, and while I do believe he loved both Rose and Nine at the same time, they were basically a unit themselves emotionally (even if just a platonic one) and so that was pretty easy to fathom. But this thing with Gwen and Ianto… I’m just not sure exactly what shape it’s taking yet, or just how they plan to portray Jack’s 51st century relationship code of conduct.

He said he and Estelle were inseparable which to me implied (though yeah, obviously not stated) emotional monogamy at least, if not physical monogamy. And the same seemed to be implied with John. So what does that mean for this scene, and for the one later with Ianto… ? This is my take on it right now, but I reserve the right to, erm… evolve it further if the whim (or someone else’s idea that I like better) comes along.

Gwen was asking uncomfortable questions, things he really didn’t want to talk about or reveal – even to her – just yet. But being Gwen, she kept pressing. So what does Jack do? He flirts. He flirts to distract and manipulate and also, yes, because he enjoys it. And I think he would have totally given her a go if she had been agreeable and yeah, not just to distract her from asking pointed questions either.

But then he found the ring and he backed off immediately. But the question is why if monogamy doesn’t have any meaning for him (which I don’t think is true at all). And he was surprised (disappointed?) as well. Partly I think because he knew of her fling with Owen and I think he was a little taken aback that she and Rhys hadn’t self-destructed while he was gone. But looking at his body language, he closed up immediately even more so than when she was asking questions. So again, why? I really just don’t know, but this scene really doesn’t bother me as much now because I do believe the flirting was as much because he just wanted her to stop asking questions as it was to actually flirt and possibly get something going with her outside of work.

And I really don’t have any problem with the idea that he would interact with both Gwen and Ianto in a romantic/sexual way at this point, because I think he does see both of them as people he cares about and would just really like to shag with no emotional strings attached. And if he could have both of them together at the same time, I think Jack would think he’d died and gone to heaven. ;-D

Now the Office Scene… **GLEE** Sooooo adorable. Both of them, just so freakin’ adorable. Much has already been stated about the subtext in that scene and I’ve seen a few posts detailing the possible conversations going on underneath the words that were actually spoken and I just love all of them. I also thought that was a really nifty bit of acting on both actors’ parts and I loved how this sets up their future interaction.

I really do think Jack had been thinking about Ianto, and maybe even fantasizing a bit about the possibility of developing a real relationship with him, while he was ‘gone’, but I also think he is unsure and maybe even a little scared - both about how Ianto will react to him now and also if it really is a good idea for either of them. But I think he really does want to try and put himself out there and be vulnerable in a way that he wasn’t willing to do before he left. I think he’s well aware that it may yet blow up in his face, but he’s decided not to pass up the opportunity to find out either way andI think that’s true bravery.

And Ianto… **hugs him** He has such a crush on Jack that just his proximity is enough to fluster Ianto’s usually unflappable self to the point where he’s looking for a canister inside a file folder. But he still held it together and made his point – he’s not willing to accept just a casual fuck in the conference room anymore. That was fine before, but not anymore. But I also loved that he was being honest about how he felt and as much as he was trying not to be a pushover for Jack, as well as not have any expectations for anything beyond what was being offered, he also wasn’t trying to hide the fact that he still very definitely feels an attraction to Jack.

So some other tidbits… I loved Owen. Just loved him. I had kind of a hate/like/annoyed relationship with him in S1, but if he continues like this I think he and I are going to be much happier together this season. LOVED the blowing on the gun after he shot out the car’s tires.

I already adored Tosh so not much changed here. I’m… curious to see where they will go with her and Owen. I wasn’t totally put off by the implication of their scene in the warehouse, but I’ll have to wait and see how they play that. I do find both Tosh and Owen’s relationships with other people interesting so… we’ll see.

And the mystery… who is Gray/Grey? Hmmm… something to ponder while I wait to see the follow up to Jack and Ianto’s date. **GLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE**

In season 2, does Ianto get to have at least a few moments where he's happy and contented, even if it doesn't last?

Most of the season, actually. There's always an underlying darkness with him from his past, but he's getting a lot more comfortable with himself. He makes a lot more jokes this year and he looks at the lighter side of things even if he does do it with a wry smile on his face.

8. Even though you can't give away specific Ianto plots in series 2, are you able to tell us which episodes Ianto has his most significant roles in?

The episodes in general are a lot more shared this year and there are very few that concentrate on specific characters. But in episode ten, the P.J.Hammond one, Ianto's the one most affected by what goes on. It's very spooky and I like that, it's one of my favourite episodes. Another significant one is the twelfth one, the one next to last, when you see a key part of Ianto's past.

Why isn't it January yet???????????????????

">
I think he is a phenomenal liar when he wants to be and when it’s important to him and furthers an agenda he has (like getting Sam to stop looking for John once he realizes John doesn’t want to be found, or like pushing Sam away in order to try and save his life, or when trying to get Bobby to fight for his), he just doesn’t do it that often and he picks his moments since lying or even just misrepresenting is such a big deal to him. So when he lies to Sam about feeling entitled, Sam believes him… and so do many (though certainly not all) fans.

But when he’s just playing a role to get information, he doesn’t try all that hard. All he’s interested in there is doing enough to get what he needs, so the goal isn’t to be believable in the lie necessarily, but just to get the info and when the lie doesn’t work, he tries truth (like with Ron and with Officer Kathleen) and if neither of those works, he comes in with guns blazing and saves the day (by taking on a really fugly Scarecrow).

Dean is just very pragmatic and goal oriented. I like that.

(contains one small and fairly vague spoiler for an upcoming ep)
